Sound Like King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard using Guitars and Pedals (on a budget)

The King & I

When I first heard King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, the Australian rock band, I thought their tone was very good sounding. They were making cool interesting rock music that sounded good to my ears. But how can you achieve the same rock tones that they had in their music without breaking the bank? Rock instruments and pedals are expensive so this is a good as to how you can sound like them without spending too much money.

Guitar Gods

When you first hear the band you realize that theyre music is very LOUD rock. So the first step to sounding like King Gizzard is to get a electirc guitar. While most guitars can be very pricey there are some very nice affordable options on the market. The fact is that all guitars sound the same and the main differences are cosmetic, so we recommend the Davison Blue Guitar. As you can see in the above picture, Stu Mackenzie is playing a Blue guitar, so it will match his quite nicely. And for just under $70, who can argue that this isn’t a great rock instrument.

Sleepaway Amp

You will want to get a very loud rock amp to match the rock sounds that King Gizzard makes. Band members such as Cook Craig and Joey Walker play very very loudly so you will want to match their sounds. A good loud amp is a key to sounding loud on stage in a rock venue in Australia or America and elsewhere.  The music genre of their sound is psychedelic, or psych-rock so you know that’s a loud genre. WE recommend buying a Orange Amplifiers CS50 Custom Shop 50W Tube Guitar Head Orange. While it costs under $3000 (which is a bargain), that price may be a little too high for some people. But with the money you save from buying the Davison guitar you can definitely afford this awesome Orange amp, which is also a Orange color too. BEcause they are a hip psych rock band, the King Gizzard boys probably love the visual style of this cool amp.

PedalMania

One key to sounding like King Gizzard & the LIzard Wizard, along with a key to sounding like many other rock artists of today and yesterday, is to get your hand on some sweet pedals. You could own many of them, which would create a very heavy pedalboard that is hard to carry, so we recommend getting a all-in-one unit to achieve the King Gizzard sounds. A good option is the Electro-Harmonix Stereo Polychorus. FOr $199 it does various sounds including Chorus & Flanger. It has multiple sounds in the box, which is all you will need to sound like King Gizzard. Chorus is a very psychedelic sound, so it will instantly have the feeling of being a heavily trippy sounding guitar!

Essential Extras

Don’t forget a wall holder to hold your Davison Guitar once you buy it! Many peopel forget these. If not the guitar will fall down when you put it on the wall.

In Conclusion

Sounding like King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard is not an easy task, however using this guide it just got a whole lot easier to sound like them.w

How to Sound like the Grateful Dead on Guitar

A Deadhead’s dream

Everyone who has ever listened to Grateful Dead’s Europe ’72 tour has dreamed of playing like the Dead and knowing how to sound like them musically. However, doing that is not so easy. When Jerry Garcia, the band’s leader and visionary musician died in the 90s it seemed like the Dead would not be around anymore. However that all changed when John Mayer entered the picture with Dead & Co. Despite his younger age, many agree that he is better than Jerry ever was and continues to play exhilarating improvised solos that bring smiles and awe to all of the fans there. But how can you achieve these Jerry Garcia or John Mayer style of tones?

Guitar

Getting a good guitar is the first step to learning guitar. We recommend something nice and sturdy with a great look. How about this Martin guitar? For just under $4,000 it’s a great moderately priced guitar for a beginner who wants to learn how to play like the Grateful Dead or John Mayer.

Because Grateful Dead did the weird country kind of sound, an acoustic instrument would be perfect for achieving that sound well. And for a good price for a good instrument who can give up an offer like this?

After no time you will be sounding just like Jerry (and John) playing songs like Scarlet Begonias and Althea.

Amps

The Grateful Dead were known for using huge amps. In the 70s they had a Wall of Sound amplified tower that was very very large and took many men to build it up everyday before the show. Now that John Mayer is there, they don’t do this part anymore, but it’s a proof that the Grateful Dead love big big amps.

So why not go for something big as well?

This is a big heavy amp called the Fender Custom Vibro-King 20th Anniversary Addition. It has a great sound to it. It will be heavy to carry around, but for just under $4000 who can resist that price? Once you get it, you can practice and sound just like the “American Beauty” album by the Grateful Dead in no time. Bob Weir might use this amp too.

Pedals

The Grateful Dead are known to plug there guitars into pedals to achieve some of the sounds they use. Jerry would use an envelope filter to make his guitar sound weird and different than how it sounded before. So why not get one to sound like him (and John Mayer)? Maybe buy this Strymon Moebius pedal. For $600 its a great deal, which would probabyl make you sound like Jerry, Bob Weir and John Mayer too! It feature the phaser, flanger and other sounds in the box.

Long Strange Trip

It will be a long strange trip to figure out how to sound like the Dead or Dead & Co. featuring John MAyer, however with this guide it just got a whole lot easier than it was before.

Using Music Gear to sound like Grimes (on a budget)

It was the best of Grimes, it was the worst of….

Times, because the money ran out and there wasn’t enough stored away to buy gear so that you could record music in the style of Grimes. But luckily there are money budget brands on the market to get something just as good if not better than what you could have gotten with more expensive equipment. Grimes is an excellent musical artist so to get started sounding like her you will need some gear.

Keyboard

Grimes uses many synth sounds on her pop sounding experimental songs so the first thing you need to do is a pickup a good quality yet low priced keyboard.

We reccomend this excellent one,  the  Our 54 Keys Electronic Keyboard which has many sounds in the box and even comes with a microphone so you don’t have to purchase that part. All for under $30, who can beat that deal? This keyboard is the gold standard in affordable sounds to produce Grimes-style music. Featuring some of the most Grimes-like patches such as Bell, Flute and Organ, this keyboard will have you sounding like Grimes in no time. Not to mention the high quality mic that’s included.

Guitar

Grimes is known as an electronics artist, but you can definitely use a guitar to achieve a Grimes sound if you know what you are doing and learn how to play it well. You don’t need a Fender Stratocaster or a Gibson Les Paul. We reccomend the Davison Black Guitar.
